Types of press and applicable regulations

Mechanical power press (means a press or press brake for the working of metal by means of tools, or for die proving, which is power driven and which embodies a flywheel and clutch)

Main Applicable Standards

EN 692: European standard for mechanical power presses, This is a comprehensive standard covering all design aspects of the press with references to many other supporting standards. From our point of view we only have to check for continued compliance i.e. as installed condition.

The main legislative requirements for UK power presses are HSG236 “power Presses, maintenance and thorough examination”. And PUWER 98 (provision of use and work equipment regulations).

PUWER 98 revokes the Power Presses Regulations 1965 and the Power Presses (Amendment) Regulations 1972 (the Power Presses Regulations). PUWER part 4 deals specifically with power presses, NOTE with the exception of part 6 all other sections of PUWER apply.

PUWER applies to all work equipment regardless of age, PUWER mainly concerns itself with managing and reducing risk, it gives recommendations for maintenance and inspection schedules .While it does not force upgrades to safety systems it offers operators reduced frequency of inspection if safety systems are upgraded to a higher standard.More
